India Boosts Mountain Warfare Edge Against China: L&T to Build Advanced BvS10 ‘Sindhu’ Armoured Vehicles for Army

New Delhi: India has taken a major step toward strengthening its high-altitude mobility and all-terrain combat capability with the Army signing a contract to procure BvS10 ‘Sindhu’ armoured vehicles from Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

The Indian major will manufacture the vehicles in partnership with the UK-based BAE Systems, marking another milestone in New Delhi’s push for self-reliance in military platforms.

L&T confirmed the development on Nov. 19, 2025, announcing that the Indian Army has formally signed the procurement contract.

Under the agreement, the company will locally build the BvS10 Sindhu at its state-of-the-art Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, Gujarat.

The facility, inaugurated in recent years, has emerged as a key hub for indigenous armoured vehicle production.

The BvS10, originally developed by BAE Systems Hรคgglunds, is a proven all-terrain vehicle widely used by European militaries for operations in snow-bound, marshy, desert, and mountainous environments.

Its ability to traverse extreme terrain makes it especially suited for India’s northern borders, where the Army requires high-mobility platforms capable of operating in deep snow, steep gradients, and glaciated regions.

L&T will produce the Indian variant, named Sindhu, with full technical and design support from BAE Systems.

This partnership combines BAE’s global expertise in armoured platforms with L&T’s growing capabilities in indigenous manufacturing under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiatives.

The contract also includes a comprehensive integrated logistics support package to ensure smooth induction, maintenance, and long-term sustainment of the platform.

This is expected to significantly enhance the Army’s readiness and mobility in challenging operational theatres.

The induction of the BvS10 Sindhu will bolster India’s capabilities in Eastern Ladakh, Sikkim, and other high-altitude sectors, offering a reliable solution for troop movement, logistics, and combat operations in environments where conventional vehicles struggle.
