Bhuj (Gujarat): India is moving away from the concept of “border security” to a new strategy of “territorial security,” building a quadrangular security grid along the borders with its neighbouring nations under which the Border Security Force (BSF) would work alongside the Indian Army, State Police, civilian administration, and citizens to ensure a foolproof system.

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, on Friday (May 29, 2026), said the Narendra Modi government had decided to completely transform the nation’s border security arrangements, moving away from the traditional “border security” approach.

Speaking after inaugurating two border outposts near here, Amit Shah said the Indian government had decided to implement the ‘Smart Border’ project to strengthen the security of the nation with an investment of thousands of crores of rupees. The Smart Border project is at present underway on the India-Bangladesh border.

He expressed the confidence that the deployment of drones, radars, watchtowers, state-of-the-art technology, and security personnel will result in the creation of a robust security grid under the Smart Border project. “Once it (Smart Border) is established, no one will dare breach the borders,” he said.

The Home Minister pointed out that the most significant gap in the border security was seen in the India-Bangladesh border, particularly in West Bengal. Once the Smart Border project and border fencing are done, the security forces would succeed in curbing illegal migration and infiltration, he said.

The border fencing and Smart Project projects were underway to install technology to aid in border monitoring and management, particularly along the forested and riverine regions of West Bengal and other states, to prevent infiltration. The entire border would then be secured, he said, adding that the Indian government had planned to assign additional responsibility to the BSF.

Amit Shah said the government had established a centre at Banaskantha for the citizens to gain insights into the BSF’s role and duties and the arduous tasks they performed. Over 250,000 citizens had visited the centre last month, and their feedback on the BSF after the visit was positive.
