India Coast Guard Commissions Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Achal to Counter Maritime Threats

By A Correspondent

New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) marked a significant enhancement in its operational capability with the commissioning of a Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) at the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on May 9, 2026. ICGS Achal is the latest vessel in the new-generation Adamya-class FPV series.

Named Achal, meaning โ€˜firmโ€™, the vessel symbolises the Indian Coast Guard’s steadfast commitment towards safeguarding national maritime interests, protecting life at sea, and ensuring the security of India’s maritime frontiers.

Designed and built indigenously by GSL, ICGS Achal represents a major milestone in India’s shipbuilding capabilities. “The vessel will undertake a wide spectrum of maritime operations, including coastal and offshore surveillance, interdiction, Search and Rescue (SAR), anti-smuggling operations, and marine pollution response,” the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a statement.

India’s MoD Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition) A. Anbarasu formally commissioned the coast guard ship into the ICG service in the presence of ICG Region (North-West) Commander Inspector General Tekur Sashi Kumar, and officials from GSL, central, and state governments.

Incorporating more than 50% indigenous components, the vessel underscores the nation’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.

The commissioning of ICGS Achal marks another important step in the Indian Coast Guard’s ongoing fleet expansion programme and will significantly contribute towards strengthening coastal security and enhancing operational readiness,” the MoD said.
