New Delhi: In a significant step towards sustainable and eco-friendly mobility, the Indian Army has signed an INR 130.58-crore contract with JBM Auto Limited for the procurement of 113 electric buses and 43 fast chargers.

The agreement, concluded on Oct. 17, 2025, marks the Army’s first large-scale induction of electric buses, reinforcing India’s transition towards clean and green transportation under the Prime Minister’s e-Drive initiative.

Officials said the induction of these electric buses will modernize the Army’s transport fleet while substantially reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The initiative also aligns with India’s ‘Net Zero’ carbon emission goals, positioning the Indian Army as a frontrunner in adopting eco-conscious mobility solutions within the defence sector.

The introduction of the electric fleet will set a new benchmark for sustainable logistics across the armed forces. It symbolises the Army’s evolving approach towards technological innovation, operational efficiency, and environmental stewardship, a model expected to influence other government and defence organisations.

The procurement has been classified as a Buy (Indian–IDDM) case, meaning the vehicles are Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured in India.

This highlights the Army’s strong commitment to supporting domestic industry, boosting indigenous manufacturing, and promoting the national vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India).

With this landmark move, the Indian Army is not only greening its mobility infrastructure but also setting an example of how defence forces can lead sustainability efforts.

The collaboration with JBM Auto Ltd, one of India’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers, marks a critical step towards integrating clean energy technologies into India’s strategic and operational framework.
