Chennai (Tamil Nadu): India’s multi-sector company, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), on Thursday (June 4, 2026), signed an INR 18,600-crore agreement with the Tamil Nadu government, involving expansion of its shipbuilding facility, setting up of a data centre, and establishing an electronics manufacturing unit in the state.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay witnessed the MoUs signing, following which he discussed further investments in the state with L&T chairman and managing director SN Subrahmanyan.
The three projects that L&T would execute in the state would provide job opportunities to around 8,200 people, according to a statement released after the MoUs signing.
Vijay, in his interaction with Subrahmanyan, appreciated the company’s continued investment in Tamil Nadu and its contributions to the state’s industrial and economic growth, the statement said.
Welcoming L&T’s proposal to establish these projects in the state, the Chief Minister said the investments would further strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading industrial destination.
He assured L&T of full cooperation from the state government and support for its future expansion plans in Tamil Nadu, the statement added.
The signed MoUs covered expansion of the company’s data centre in Kancheepuram district, worth INR 15,000 crore, and generating employment for 500 persons.
L&T would also establish an electronics manufacturing facility at Coimbatore with an investment of INR 2,500 crore, creating 2,000 jobs.
The company would also expand its shipbuilding facility in Kattupalli in Tiruvallur district near Chennai with an investment of INR 1,100 crore to create 5,700 jobs.
“The projects are aligned with the Tamil Nadu government’s vision of transforming the state into a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036,” the state government statement said.
The investments would strengthen the state’s diversified industrial ecosystem, promote digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence-related applications, and enhance the electronic manufacturing sector.
The Kattupalli shipyard expansion project would create a world-class shipbuilding infrastructure for the offshore wind energy construction industry, while generating substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities for the state’s youth.
The MoU signing was the first industrial agreement entered into by the Joseph Vijay government since it took office in May 2026.
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana, Chief Secretary M. Vaikumar, Additional Chief Secretary V. Vijayakumar, Guidance Tamil Nadu Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer P. Alarmel, L&T Strategic Initiatives head KG Sathyanarayanan, witnessed the MoUs signing.
